FAVORED BY DESIGN ICONS
Ignazio Gardella and Franco Albini, two influential designers of the 20th century, held a deep appreciation for Descalzi's chairs. Embracing their exceptional strength and aesthetic charm, Gardella and Albini frequently incorporated these chairs into their interior design projects during the 1950s and 1960s. Their endorsement further solidified the reputation of Descalzi's chairs as an emblem of style and quality.

Inspired by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi

ITALY (1767 - ?) Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, born in Chiavari, Republic of Genoa in 1767, was a notable figure in the world of furniture production. Hailing from a family of bell ringers, Descalzi was affectionately nicknamed "il Campanino." After training under a skilled carpenter in Chiavari, he ventured out with his brother to establish their own furniture workshop in 1795. The following year, Descalzi's talent earned him a silver medal from the Economic Society of Chiavari for his exceptional chests of drawers. Notably, he revolutionized the industry by introducing Monte San Giacomo slate as a cost-effective alternative to marble. However, his most significant achievement was the creation of the iconic Chiavari chair in 1807, fulfilling a challenge set by the Marquis of Rivarola. This elegant chair became immensely popular, leading to the continued production by Descalzi's sons and subsequent generations. Today, the furniture industry in Chiavari thrives, thanks in part to Descalzi's enduring legacy.
